Cristiano Ronaldo departs Portuguese national team following rift with Jorge Jesus
Cristiano Ronaldo, the 41-year-old Portuguese national team captain, abruptly left the team’s training camp in Denmark last week following a public disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus. The conflict emerged after Ronaldo was benched during matches, fueling tensions that led the forward to return to his club, Al-Nassr, in Saudi Arabia. Supporters expressed their outrage through posters in Lisbon and a massive wave of unfollows on the national team's official social media accounts, while Ronaldo's wife briefly posted and then deleted a critical message regarding the coach.
Despite the friction, Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença and coach Jorge Jesus have both publicly characterized the incident as a "misunderstanding." Following Portugal's 4-2 victory against Denmark and a 2-1 win over Norway, both parties have left the door open for a potential return, with Jesus stating that the decision lies entirely with the player for future squad selections. However, conflicting reports from local media suggest that Ronaldo may refuse to return as long as Jesus remains head coach. Currently, the star has resumed training with Al-Nassr, and his future status with the "Selecao" remains uncertain.
