Unstable weather brings rain and storms to Cyprus
Cyprus is currently experiencing a period of unstable weather marked by heavy rainfall and isolated thunderstorms. The Meteorological Service issued a yellow warning in effect from 03:30 until 18:00 on Sunday, October 4, 2026, noting that rainfall intensity could locally exceed 35 millimeters per hour. Hail is possible during storm activity, while winds are expected to fluctuate and strengthen.
While the district of Paphos reported steady, heavy rainfall since the beginning of October, which has been welcomed as beneficial for groundwater and reservoir replenishment, weather officials emphasize that the current conditions on the island are not comparable to the extreme phenomena recently seen in Crete. Meteorological Officer Panayiotis Lingis confirmed that most storm activity has been focused on the northwest, including Polis Chrysochous, Pyrgos Tillyrias, and the Akamas region, as well as inland and mountainous areas.
Authorities report that the weather, while intense, has caused no significant problems or disruptions to road traffic across the island. The current unstable air mass is expected to persist, with local rains and thunderstorms forecast to continue intermittently through Wednesday. Temperatures are predicted to rise slightly but will remain slightly below the seasonal average, with inland highs reaching approximately 27°C.
