Unstable weather conditions and rare waterspouts reported in Cyprus
Cyprus has been affected by an unstable air mass throughout the weekend of October 4-5, 2026, leading to isolated heavy thunderstorms, rain, and hail. The Meteorological Service issued a yellow warning that remained in effect until 6:00 pm on Sunday. On Sunday afternoon, a rare double waterspout occurred off the coast of Pomos in the Paphos district, captured in widely circulated videos. Additionally, residents in the occupied Karpasia region reported exceptionally large hail, with stones reaching diameters of approximately 6 centimeters, causing significant local concern.
Temperatures throughout the period generally fluctuated between 27°C and 30°C inland and on the coast, with mountain temperatures staying lower, around 17-18°C. Localized weather instability is expected to continue through Wednesday, with forecasters predicting afternoon showers and thunderstorms, primarily affecting mountainous areas and the island's interior. While conditions are expected to improve slightly with rising temperatures, the Meteorological Service continues to monitor the atmospheric instability, noting that the seasonal averages will remain slightly below normal.
