North Korea launches ballistic missile following border tensions
On Saturday, October 3, 2026, North Korea launched a ballistic missile from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea. According to South Korean military officials, the projectile was fired at approximately 6:30 a.m. local time and traveled over 700 kilometers before falling into the sea, well outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone. This marks one of more than ten missile tests conducted by Pyongyang this year.
The launch follows escalating tensions after North Korea rejected claims by Seoul that its landmines had severely injured South Korean soldiers within the demilitarized zone. In response to the missile test, the South Korean national security council convened an emergency meeting to assess the security situation. Seoul is currently working with Washington and Tokyo to analyze technical details of the launch and has increased surveillance to monitor for potential subsequent tests.
