AEL Limassol marks 96th anniversary
Athletic Union of Limassol (AEL), one of Cyprus's most historic sports clubs, celebrated its 96th anniversary on October 4, 2026. The organization was founded on October 4, 1930, when a group of athletes and community leaders met at the Agios Georgios confectionery on St. Andrew Street to establish a professional sports body. The club was built on the founding principle, articulated by Nikos Solomonidis, that sports should remain neutral and inclusive, transcending political, racial, and religious divisions.
Over the past 96 years, AEL has expanded beyond football to encompass various athletic departments, serving as a hub for youth sports and fostering a culture of fair play in Limassol. Today, the club is recognized for its broad contribution to society and its role in promoting athletic standards among hundreds of young people. Local media outlets note that the organization continues to carry its legacy forward, emphasizing that its primary strength lies in its vast community of loyal supporters and its commitment to the healthy development of local youth.
