Police intensify nationwide traffic and security operations
Cypriot police conducted a series of coordinated operations across the island between October 5 and October 6, 2026, aimed at preventing serious crime and improving road safety. In one operation on the night of October 4-5, officers checked 532 vehicles and 682 people, leading to 19 arrests for offenses including drug possession, illegal residency, and drunk driving. Traffic police reported 312 violations, including 109 for speeding, and impounded 17 vehicles. Separately, in Paphos, a three-day crackdown resulted in 13 arrests and 195 traffic reports, while 34 premises were inspected for noise pollution and licensing violations.
In Nicosia, police investigated two related road collisions occurring at the same spot in Parisinos. A 44-year-old was injured after hitting a utility pole while intoxicated, and hours later, a 22-year-old driver struck a parked police car attending the scene, injuring an officer. Both drivers were charged out of court. Additionally, a 25-year-old in Paphos was arrested for driving five times over the legal alcohol limit and appeared in court. Following these operations, police reported four additional arrests on the night of October 5-6, with 605 vehicles checked and 132 speeding violations documented.
