Diko and presidential candidates prepare for the 2028 elections
As political preparations for the 2028 presidential elections intensify in Cyprus, the Democratic Party (DIKO) is navigating internal calls to reconsider its alliance with President Nikos Christodoulides. While DIKO deputy chair Christiana Erotokritou emphasized that the party will not rush its decision-making process and must follow internal protocols, party members and close associates are pressuring leader Nicolas Papadopoulos to consider an independent candidacy. This push stems from frustrations regarding the party's current role in the government and dissatisfaction over policy implementation, particularly concerning the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI).
President Nikos Christodoulides, meanwhile, continues to monitor the evolving landscape within major political parties, including the Democratic Rally (DISY), before formalizing his own intentions for re-election. His team, including communications advisor Nikos Katsouridis and office director Panagiotis Palates, is actively managing the pre-election strategy. Analysts note that with DIKO and ELAM holding significant electoral weight—10% and 10.9% respectively in recent parliamentary elections—their final positions remain critical to the outcome. The fragmented political landscape, particularly within the center-right, suggests that securing alliances will be essential for any successful bid as the election approaches.
