German Chancellor visits Kyiv to pledge new military and energy aid
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on Sunday, October 4, 2026, accompanied by Economic Minister Katerina Reiche and executives from major defense firms including Siemens Energy, Hensoldt, Diehl Defence, and Quantum Systems. This high-level visit aims to demonstrate unwavering German support for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy amidst an escalation in Russian strikes against Ukrainian cities, residential areas, and energy infrastructure.
During his visit, Chancellor Merz announced a new aid package totaling 1 billion euros in military assistance and 350 million euros for the restoration of Ukraine's energy grid. Additionally, the two nations are finalizing a bilateral agreement for the joint production of various types of drones. Merz emphasized the urgency of the situation, warning that if Russia is not halted now, its military machinery will eventually pose a direct threat to European stability.
