First Citizens' Assembly on Cyprus issue expected by early 2027
The first Citizens' Assembly dedicated to the Cyprus issue is scheduled to convene by the end of 2026 or early 2027, according to Alexandros Lordos, a representative of the Civil Society Advisory Body's Coordinating Committee. This initiative was established by the two community leaders last August with the primary aim of fostering public consultation and facilitating a structured dialogue to address the long-standing national problem.
The Advisory Body consists of five Greek Cypriots and five Turkish Cypriots who act as a secretariat. Their core responsibility is to bridge the gap between political leadership and the general public by identifying concerns and selecting a representative sample of citizens from across the society, rather than relying on existing non-governmental organizations. This assembly is designed to provide leaders with a better understanding of public sentiment as they make critical decisions regarding the resolution of the Cyprus conflict.
Moving forward, the committee's focus remains on the logistical preparation of the assembly, which is intended to institutionalize inclusive political engagement. By involving ordinary citizens directly in the discourse, the organizers hope to generate informed contributions that reflect the diverse perspectives of the broader community.
