Cyprus launches national campaign against distracted driving
The Cyprus Police have announced a nationwide enforcement and awareness campaign targeting distracted driving, with a specific focus on the use of mobile phones and handheld devices while operating a vehicle. The initiative is scheduled to run from Monday, October 5, 2026, to Sunday, October 11, 2026.
Throughout the campaign, traffic police units will conduct targeted roadside inspections across the island. This operation is being carried out in coordination with the European Roads Policing Network (ROADPOL) as part of their Europe-wide "Focus on the Road" project.
Authorities emphasized the urgency of the initiative by citing statistics from the 2023–2025 period. Data reveals that distracted or inattentive driving was the primary cause of road accidents, accounting for 22.1% of all road fatalities and 29.4% of all serious injuries in Cyprus during these three years. The campaign serves as a measure to mitigate these risks and improve road safety through increased surveillance and public information.
