Cyprus Police launch road safety campaign focused on driver distraction
The Cyprus Police have announced a nationwide traffic awareness and enforcement campaign targeting driver distraction, with a specific focus on the use of mobile phones or handheld devices. The operation is scheduled to take place from Monday, October 5, 2026, through Sunday, October 11, 2026. During this period, traffic police will conduct targeted checks across the entire road network.
This initiative is part of a broader collaboration between the Cyprus Police and the European Traffic Police Network (ROADPOL), aligning with the Europe-wide "Focus on the Road" campaign. Data from the 2023–2025 period highlights the severity of the issue, indicating that distraction and inattentive driving were the primary cause of road accidents, accounting for 22.1% of all road fatalities and 29.4% of serious injuries during those three years.
In addition to this new campaign, the police have reported results from a recent effort focused on protective helmet use. During that operation, authorities issued 99 citations for lack of helmets and 305 for other traffic violations, leading to the impoundment of 17 personal mobility devices and 9 motorcycles. The police continue to perform daily, round-the-clock traffic monitoring to enhance overall safety.
