Zelenskyy accuses Russia of escalation through intensified aerial strikes
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on October 4, 2026, that Russia is escalating its aerial bombardment campaign against Kyiv and other major cities to weaken Ukrainian resistance. During a press conference alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Zelenskyy condemned the targeting of critical infrastructure, such as bridges, describing the Russian strategy as an attempt to force the displacement of civilians from urban centers.
Zelenskyy confirmed that U.S. peace envoys are working to facilitate a technical-level tripartite meeting by the end of October. Ukraine has expressed willingness to host such discussions in the United Arab Emirates or another neutral location. In a separate development during the visit, the energy ministers of Ukraine and Germany held talks regarding the supply of liquefied natural gas to Ukrainian storage facilities, strengthening energy cooperation between the two nations.
The current diplomatic efforts aim to manage the ongoing conflict through technical negotiations, though the situation remains tense due to the continued Russian offensive. The Ukrainian government maintains its focus on securing infrastructure support while engaging in international peace initiatives.
