Outbreak of suspected plague in Irkutsk leads to quarantine measures
A 28-year-old laboratory technician named Daria Shipilova died in Irkutsk, Siberia, after suffering from a severe illness. While some reports, including statements from the governor of Buryatia, Alexey Tsydenov, attributed her death to pneumonic plague contracted from a broken test tube at the Anti-Plague Research Institute, Russian health authorities have officially attributed the death to "pneumonia of unknown origin" and have not confirmed a plague diagnosis.
In response to the incident, authorities have placed approximately 200 people who had contact with the victim under quarantine and medical observation. Five medical facilities in Irkutsk, including the Ivano-Matreninskaya Children's Hospital and a maternity ward, have been placed under quarantine. Additionally, some universities have suspended classes, and local industrial sites have mandated the use of masks, fueling public anxiety. The situation has caught the attention of the White House, with U.S. officials stating they are monitoring developments.
Currently, there is a discrepancy between local medical staff reports of plague and official government documentation, which avoids naming the disease. Investigations into laboratory safety protocols and the circumstances of the technician's death remain ongoing.
