Religious calendar observations and World Teachers' Day
On October 4, 2026, the church commemorated several figures, most notably Saint Hierotheos the Areopagite. Saint Hierotheos was a former Platonic philosopher who served on the Areopagus Council before being converted by the Apostle Paul and serving as the first Bishop of Athens. His relics are preserved in various locations, including the Megara monastery and Mount Athos. The same date also marked the remembrance of Saints Domnina, Verina, Adauctus, and Kallisthene, with historical records noting that Adauctus was exiled for refusing to marry his daughter to the pagan prefect Maximinus.
The following day, October 5, 2026, the calendar honored Saint Charitine, who suffered martyrdom during the reign of Diocletian between 284 and 305 AD. Saint Charitine was a servant to Claudius and was interrogated in 304 AD by the prefect Domitian for her Christian faith. Despite undergoing severe tortures, including being subjected to fire and attempted drowning, she remained steadfast until her death. October 5 is also recognized globally as World Teachers' Day, a day dedicated to acknowledging the vital role educators play in society.
