Yellow thunderstorm warning issued as heavy rain hits Cyprus
Cyprus is experiencing unstable weather conditions, with the Department of Meteorology issuing a yellow warning for isolated strong thunderstorms and potential hail on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. The alert, which remains in effect from 13:00 to 18:00, covers mountainous areas, the inland region, and the northwest of the island. Authorities have cautioned that rainfall intensity could locally exceed 35 millimeters per hour, accompanied by variable and strengthening winds.
Heavy rainfall has already caused significant disruption in the capital, Nicosia, where severe downpours lasting approximately 30 minutes flooded streets in areas like Archangelos and Engomi, leading to localized traffic issues and vehicle incidents. By the morning of October 6, average rainfall across the country had reached 25.2 millimeters, or 77% of the monthly average, with specific stations like Athienou and Polis recording rainfall well over 100% of the expected norm for October.
The unstable air mass is expected to persist through Wednesday, after which the weather is predicted to settle. Thursday and Friday are forecast to be mainly fine with only locally increased clouds, although temperatures will remain slightly below seasonal averages. Residents are advised to continue exercising caution during the remainder of the warning period.
