Yellow weather warning issued for Cyprus as storms cause flooding
The Cyprus Department of Meteorology issued a yellow weather warning on October 6, 2026, valid from 13:00 to 18:00. The alert highlighted the risk of isolated severe thunderstorms, potential hail, and intense rainfall, with rates locally exceeding 35 millimetres per hour, particularly affecting inland areas, the mountains, and the northwest of the island.
Following the activation of the warning, intense downpours struck Nicosia and Larnaca. In the Archangelos and Engomi districts of Nicosia, heavy rain lasting approximately 30 minutes caused significant localized flooding, turning roads into streams and disrupting traffic. Some vehicles were immobilized or damaged during these events.
Before this weather front, official reports indicated that October rainfall in Cyprus had already reached 77% of the monthly average by the morning of October 6, with some areas like Athienou and Polis Chrysochou recording levels significantly higher than normal. Unstable air masses are expected to persist through Wednesday, followed by a gradual improvement of weather conditions and a rise in temperatures beginning Thursday.
