FBI arrests California resident for spying on behalf of China
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested 34-year-old Guanying Zhang on Sunday on charges of acting as an illegal agent for the People's Republic of China. According to U.S. Attorney Bill Esley, Zhang, a resident of Irvine, California, is accused of conducting surveillance on behalf of Chinese officials. The operation targeted an individual closely associated with a Taiwan government official while in Seattle in 2025.
Prosecutors allege that Zhang gathered intelligence by tracking the target’s movements, capturing photographs and video, and recording vehicle license plate numbers, which were then transmitted back to Chinese handlers. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the arrest, noting that Zhang was apprehended while attempting to board a flight to Shanghai. Patel issued a strong public warning to foreign adversaries, declaring that the United States is no longer a safe environment for conducting espionage activities.
While the investigation remains ongoing, the incident highlights heightened concerns regarding foreign influence and intelligence operations on U.S. soil. Authorities have presented these charges as part of a broader commitment to countering espionage efforts directed against the United States and its international partners.
