Anorthosis wins appeal against stadium and travel bans
On October 5, 2026, the Court of Appeal of the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) unanimously overturned disciplinary penalties imposed on Anorthosis Famagusta. The original decision by the Judicial Committee, issued on September 23, 2026, had mandated one match behind closed doors and a ban on traveling fans for an away fixture, following an incident during the match against APOEL. The club's legal team successfully argued that the punishment was disproportionate and contradicted recent precedents, asserting that no dangerous objects were thrown onto the pitch.
As a direct consequence of the successful appeal, the stadium ban for the upcoming match against Paphos FC is lifted, and supporters will be permitted to attend. Furthermore, the restriction on travel for the away game against Omonia 29M is also removed. While the club remains subject to a monetary fine, the management has hailed the court's decision as a significant victory and a vindication of their legal efforts, calling for fans to fill the Antonis Papadopoulos stadium for the next fixture. The club expressed dissatisfaction regarding public statements made by the Judicial Committee president prior to the hearing.
