President Christodoulides praises US relations and Trump's negotiating style
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides held an extensive interview with Breitbart News on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, which was subsequently shared by US President Donald Trump on Truth Social. During the discussion, Christodoulides declared that Cyprus-US relations are at their historic peak, describing Washington as Nicosia’s closest ally in areas of defense, intelligence, and security. He remarked that, unlike in 1999, when the Cyprus problem dominated the bilateral agenda, cooperation now encompasses a broad strategic partnership.
Christodoulides praised Donald Trump for his direct negotiating style, stating that the American President possesses a “unique advantage” because his positions are clear, which facilitates the finding of solutions to difficult issues. The President expressed a desire for a five-year extension of the lifting of the US arms embargo to further enhance strategic planning. He also touched upon regional stability, criticizing Turkey’s role, and announced that new developments regarding energy projects in the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone are expected early this month.
Highlighting the necessity for a unified Western approach, the President emphasized that Europe cannot afford to distance itself from the United States. Future steps include ongoing efforts to upgrade military infrastructure and the potential pursuit of high-level meetings at the White House to further solidify these bilateral ties.
