Giorgos Pamboridis announces bid for DISY presidential nomination
Former Health Minister and Member of Parliament Giorgos Pamboridis has officially announced his bid to secure the Democratic Rally (DISY) nomination for the 2028 presidential elections. Pamboridis cited a need for unity and a departure from internal party discord, arguing that his experience and ability to build cross-party consensus make him the ideal candidate to lead the party into the next electoral cycle.
Following his announcement, Pamboridis has actively campaigned for a consultative meeting between himself, DISY President Annita Demetriou, and former party leader Averof Neofytou. He proposed that the three potential candidates should reach an internal agreement on a single nominee to avoid the toxicity and division of a contested primary, which he fears could jeopardize the party’s chances of winning. He noted that he would be willing to reconsider his candidacy under specific conditions that guarantee party cohesion.
Meanwhile, internal tensions persist as Averof Neofytou remains ambiguous regarding his own intentions, though reports suggest he is gathering signatures to participate in the process. With the formal deadline for submitting candidacies set for October 26 and the primary vote scheduled for November 28, the party leadership is monitoring the situation closely to determine if a three-way race is inevitable.
