Meridiam leads financial finalization for Great Sea Interconnector project
The Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, an undersea electricity cable linking Greece and Cyprus, has entered a critical phase as the French investment fund Meridiam assumes a leadership role. Following an agreement to acquire a 66% stake in the project, Meridiam is spearheading efforts to resolve technical and financial hurdles required to move the initiative into full-scale construction. This intervention is expected to catalyze the transition to final financial closure, with the firm actively negotiating with the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the National Bank of Greece to structure loan terms and capital allocation.
In conjunction with the project developer ADMIE, these negotiations aim to solidify the final financial architecture of the interconnector. Alongside the financial restructuring, the project is scheduled to resume its research and survey activities by October 26, 2026. The participation of an international investor like Meridiam is viewed as a significant development, intended to boost investor confidence and ensure the long-term viability of this major infrastructure undertaking.
