Sentencing of British father postponed in Paphos child death case
The Paphos District Court has postponed the sentencing of a 37-year-old British man who pleaded guilty to causing the death of his three-year-old son by a rash or negligent act. The tragedy occurred on July 12, 2026, when the child fell approximately 10 meters from a fourth-floor hotel window in Chlorakas, Paphos, on the first day of the family's holiday. The defendant, whose name has not been released, entered a guilty plea on September 22. Sentencing proceedings were scheduled for Monday, but the court granted a one-day adjournment at the request of the defence.
Defence attorney Alexandros Alexandrou explained that the delay is necessary to secure vital documentation from the United Kingdom regarding the father's employment and income. These documents are intended to support a formal plea for leniency and the imposition of the minimum possible sentence. The prosecution is expected to present the facts of the case before the court determines the penalty. Previously, a request to suspend the criminal prosecution on humanitarian grounds, citing the trauma suffered by the family, was rejected by the Attorney General, who maintained that the legal process must proceed despite the tragic circumstances.
