Austrian Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler announces resignation
Austrian Vice Chancellor and leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), Andreas Babler, announced his resignation on Sunday, October 4, 2026. He intends to step down from both roles by the end of this year, though some reports indicate the transition could extend into early 2027. Babler stated he would retain his ministerial portfolios for Housing, Culture, Media, and Sports. His successor in the vice-chancellorship is set to be Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment.
Babler explained that his decision aims to end public internal party conflicts that distract from government responsibilities. The SPÖ will be led by interim officials who will organize the election of a new leader. Chancellor and leader of the People's Party (VPÖ), Christian Stocker, emphasized that these internal party shifts should not jeopardize the stability of the current coalition government, which also includes the NEOS party. A formal, orderly transition is planned to ensure the government's ongoing operational focus remains on substantive policy work rather than political infighting.
