Trial continues regarding financial dealings at Osios Avvakoum Monastery
On Monday, five prosecution witnesses testified before the Nicosia Permanent Assize Court regarding the ongoing Osios Avvakoum Monastery case. The proceedings focused on allegations concerning financial transactions intended for the creation of religious icons and the general development of the monastery located in Fterikoudi.
A key witness, identified as A.Z., testified that she contacted Father Porfyrios in 2020 regarding plans to expand the monastery. She expressed a desire to fund an icon of Saint Ephraim, which was quoted at a cost of 5,000 euros. Although she found the price high, she was referred to Father Nektarios, who allegedly insisted on the high quality of the work. The witness stated she transferred 2,000 euros to Father Porfyrios and 3,000 euros to Father Nektarios, noting that she never received official receipts for these payments.
The trial follows a high-profile investigation into the financial affairs and activities of the clergy members involved. As the case progresses, the court continues to examine these testimonies to determine the legitimacy of the monastery's financial operations and the conduct of the accused fathers.
