U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to lead the 6th U.S.-Greece Strategic Dialogue
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to arrive in Athens on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, to preside over the 6th U.S.-Greece Strategic Dialogue. Accompanied by his Greek counterpart, George Gerapetritis, Rubio will engage in discussions covering defense, energy, maritime security, and technology. This visit builds upon a preceding two-day diplomatic trip where preliminary strategic pillars—including the procurement of F-35 fighter jets and regional geopolitical stability—were addressed.
During the upcoming dialogue, the delegations intend to sign three major cooperation agreements. These include the renewal of a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the protection of cultural property, specifically restricting the import of archaeological and ethnological items dating up to the 15th century, alongside security and military cooperation pacts involving the Florida National Guard and maritime certification. The agenda also features discussions on the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project.
While the U.S. views Greece as a critical strategic ally with deep military and economic ties, the visit has drawn attention from Turkish media outlets. These reports highlight concerns regarding the shift in regional power dynamics, particularly focusing on the armament of Greek F-35s and the U.S. military presence in Souda and Alexandroupoli. The talks will continue with specific sessions involving high-ranking officials to further reinforce bilateral security and investment partnerships.
