Rialto Theatre seeks resolution on ownership status and management
The Rialto Theatre in Limassol has publicly called for the immediate resolution of its long-standing ownership status following another postponement of the matter by the Council of Ministers. In coordination with the Limassol Municipality, the theatre management issued a statement emphasizing the institution's cultural contributions and historical role since its 1999 reopening, which was facilitated by a major investment from the Limassol Cooperative Savings Bank.
The proposal currently under consideration involves the Limassol Municipality assuming responsibility for the building's ownership and operations while maintaining the theatre's organizational independence. The plan includes a commitment from the municipality to cover 50% of the theatre's annual funding, a measure reportedly discussed and agreed upon with the Ministry of Finance. This arrangement aims to reduce the state's financial burden while preserving the cultural functions established through various Cabinet decisions dating back to 1999, 2003, and 2019. The institution continues to serve as a vital hub for performing arts, including the International Contemporary Dance Festival and the Cyprus Choreography Platform. The theater expects the government to proceed with the proposed administrative transfer to ensure future stability.
