Rialto Theatre urges government to resolve long-standing ownership issue
The Rialto Theatre in Limassol, a cornerstone of Cypriot performing arts, has publicly requested that the government immediately resolve the theater's long-standing ownership status. The organization is advocating for the acceptance of a proposal submitted by the Limassol Municipality, which would see the city take responsibility for the building while maintaining the theater's institutional independence.
The proposal, which the theater reports has already received consent from the Ministry of Finance, includes a commitment from the Limassol Municipality to cover 50% of the theater's annual grant. This move is intended to reduce the financial burden on the state and provide stability to an institution that has been operating without a clear ownership structure since the 2018 cessation of support from the Cooperative Savings Bank of Limassol. The theater’s management has been pursuing a solution through official channels since 2019, noting that ongoing uncertainty complicates long-term planning and daily operations.
Despite the theater’s consistent advocacy, the issue remains unresolved following a recent postponement of the matter by the Council of Ministers. The Rialto Theatre continues to wait for official state action to finalize the transition, arguing that this settlement is essential to preserving the cultural legacy of the institution, which has served as a central hub for major international and local artistic festivals since its reopening in 1999.
