Regional local government leaders meet with ELAM party to discuss administrative reforms
On October 5, 2026, the Presidents of the District Organizations for Local Self-Government (EOA) of Nicosia, Larnaca, and Paphos met with representatives of the National Popular Front (ELAM) as part of a series of consultations with parliamentary parties. The meeting focused on critical operational challenges facing the newly restructured regional organizations.
Key issues raised included sustainable funding models based on the European Charter of Local Self-Government, the management of hazardous and communal buildings, and the development licensing process. Furthermore, the EOA presidents addressed the urgent need for infrastructure improvements regarding water supply, sewage networks, and waste management. A significant point of contention was the legal and financial responsibility for compensation related to court decisions made prior to the formation of the current EOA structures, which the presidents argued should remain with the previous administrative bodies.
The delegation, consisting of the EOA presidents, requested active parliamentary support from ELAM MPs Sotiris Ioannou, Andreas Papacharalambous, Marios Pelekanos, and Linos-Ioannis Chatzigeorgiou. The discussions emphasized that strengthening local government is a strategic priority to improve services for the public. This consultation is part of an ongoing effort by the regional leadership to secure legislative and fiscal backing for their operational independence and service delivery capacity.
