Two 18-year-olds arrested in Paphos over cat shooting
Police in Paphos are investigating the killing of a cat that was found dead near its owner's home on October 4, 2026. A 56-year-old man reported the discovery to the authorities, prompting an inspection by the Animal Police and the Paphos Central Police Station. A post-mortem examination performed on Monday revealed that the animal had been struck by 13 firearm pellets.
Investigations led to the identification and arrest of two 18-year-old suspects. The first suspect, who is a National Guard soldier, was arrested on Monday and subsequently remanded in custody for four days by the Paphos District Court. Police stated that he admitted to the offense, which reportedly involved using a firearm that belonged to a deceased relative. Evidence was gathered through closed-circuit surveillance footage that captured the suspect's vehicle. A second 18-year-old suspect was arrested on Tuesday, with authorities stating he was present at the scene and actively participated in the incident.
Paphos CID is investigating multiple charges against the suspects, including the killing of an animal, conspiracy to commit a misdemeanour and a felony, illegal possession and transportation of a firearm and explosives, and discharging a weapon in a residential area. The investigation remains ongoing as police work to conclude the evidence gathering process.
