Cyprus police dismantle text message fraud ring
Cypriot authorities have arrested several individuals in connection with a sophisticated phishing scheme targeting citizens via deceptive SMS. The fraudsters sent messages masquerading as the General Healthcare System (GeSY) or traffic fine payment services, using aliases like “CY MEDICAL” and “traffic CY.” Victims were prompted to click links or provide bank card details, resulting in significant financial losses. Investigations were triggered by multiple complaints, including incidents from September 21 and October 2, where victims lost thousands of euros through unauthorized ATM withdrawals.
A 24-year-old Pakistani national was arrested at Larnaca Airport while attempting to leave the country and has been remanded for eight days. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of a 25-year-old on a highway, along with two other suspects aged 18 and 29. Police seized multiple credit cards, mobile phones, and cheques during these operations. Authorities, including the Health Insurance Organization, have issued urgent warnings, emphasizing that official services will never request banking credentials or financial transactions via text messages. The investigation is ongoing as police work to identify further victims and potential accomplices.
