Life sentence handed down for murder of student in Kofinou
The Permanent Criminal Court of Larnaca has sentenced a 22-year-old Bangladeshi national to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of his 22-year-old compatriot, student Shahruar Ahmed Emon, in June 2026. The perpetrator pleaded guilty to the murder, leading the court to suspend all other pending charges against him. The victim had been missing since June 11, and the defendant was arrested on June 21, eventually leading police to the location where he had buried the victim in the Kofinou area.
The investigation revealed that the two men met on a bus on June 7. The perpetrator, believing the student came from a wealthy family, bought a knife on June 9. On June 11, he lured the victim to Kofinou under the false pretense of a job offer paying 50 euros per day. During the meeting, the perpetrator stabbed the victim multiple times and subsequently strangled him to death. Following the killing, the perpetrator used the victim's mobile phone to send extortion messages to the student's father in Greece, demanding 35,000 euros under the threat of removing and selling the victim's kidney.
This legal proceeding concludes with the defendant being sent to the Central Prisons. The conviction encompassed multiple charges including kidnapping, extortion, and unlawful deprivation of liberty.
