President Christodoulides to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Erhürman on October 13
President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides is scheduled to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman on Tuesday, October 13, at 3:30 p.m. The meeting, which will take place under the auspices of the United Nations, aims to achieve substantive progress toward resuming negotiations within the agreed framework. Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis confirmed the engagement, noting the UN Secretary-General's continued commitment to the peace process. This meeting follows a series of recent diplomatic contacts, including discussions in New York, and precedes a visit to Cyprus by UN personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin.
In preparation for the meeting, President Christodoulides held briefings on October 8 with the leaders of DIPA, EDEK, and the Ecologists' Movement—parties currently without parliamentary representation—to update them on the state of the Cyprus problem. During these discussions, the government expressed its intent to re-present a 19-point proposal to the Turkish Cypriot side to facilitate progress. While government officials remain hopeful for a thorough discussion on these measures, local political leaders expressed varying degrees of skepticism and emphasized the necessity for a more active role from the European Union in light of ongoing challenges. The atmosphere remains tense due to previous diplomatic hurdles and recent domestic provocations.
