YKAN social intervention programs drive drug rehabilitation efforts in Cyprus
Beyond traditional law enforcement measures like arrests and prosecutions, the Cyprus Anti-Drugs Unit (YKAN) is actively implementing a social strategy focused on prevention, treatment, and reintegration. While public perception often centers on criminal investigations, internal data highlights a significant shift toward medical and social support for those struggling with substance abuse.
According to official statistics, YKAN’s Social Intervention Officers have successfully referred 1,760 individuals to specialized treatment centers across the country between 2020 and 2026. These referrals primarily involve individuals suffering from drug dependency, alongside members of their family and broader support networks. This initiative represents an effort to prioritize rehabilitation and societal reintegration over court proceedings.
The effectiveness of this approach is being recognized as a viable alternative to purely punitive actions. The shift in methodology reflects a broader effort to address the root causes of drug use, with the institution continuing to operate its social intervention programs alongside its standard enforcement duties to reduce drug-related harm in Cypriot society.
