Electric vehicle market share grows in the European Union during 2026
During the first eight months of 2026, electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for over one in five new car registrations in the European Union. According to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), the market share for electric cars rose to 21.7%, a significant increase from the 15.8% recorded in 2025. Total vehicle registrations in the EU grew by 5.3%, reaching 7.55 million units, with approximately 1.64 million of those being electric vehicles.
In August alone, nearly 196,500 electric cars were registered, capturing a 28% market share compared to 18% during the same month last year. Furthermore, data indicates that vehicles from Chinese manufacturers now represent nearly one out of every ten new cars sold in the EU. This growth is attributed to rising fuel prices, improvements in vehicle range, increased consumer confidence, and competitive pricing strategies. Additionally, national incentives provided by various European governments, including Greece, continue to play a crucial role in promoting the transition to electric mobility.
