UK and Israel face diplomatic standoff over Jerusalem consulate closure
The United Kingdom and Israel are currently embroiled in a diplomatic dispute that risks escalating as a deadline for the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem approaches this Thursday. On September 8, Israel ordered the closure of the facility and the withdrawal of all British diplomats within 30 days. This directive came in retaliation for the United Kingdom's announcement of a ban on the import of goods produced in Israeli settlements located in the occupied West Bank.
British National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell reportedly visited Israel last week in an unannounced effort to negotiate a resolution, but he failed to secure an agreement to keep the consulate operational. The closure is expected to affect approximately 30 British diplomats and their families. Should Israel proceed with the shutdown, sources indicate that the UK is likely to respond by expelling a corresponding number of Israeli diplomats from the Israeli embassy in London.
While France and Canada have also implemented similar sanctions regarding settlement goods, Israel has not taken reciprocal measures against those countries. As the Thursday deadline nears, the situation remains tense, with no clear indication of a diplomatic breakthrough to prevent the reciprocal expulsion of staff.
