Large-scale drone exchanges between Russia and Ukraine result in casualties and infrastructure damage
On the night of October 5-6, 2026, Russia and Ukraine engaged in a significant escalation of drone warfare. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that approximately 650 Ukrainian drones were launched toward the Russian capital region between 8:30 p.m. Monday and 5:00 a.m. Tuesday. Russian air defenses reportedly intercepted 105 drones approaching Moscow, while regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov stated 185 were neutralized across 16 locations. The attack caused two fatalities—a 71-year-old man in Radumlya and a 20-year-old man in Baribino—along with nine injuries and significant property damage, including 47 homes and a fuel depot fire in Litvinovo. Analysts noted the Volodarskaya fuel storage station was a suspected primary target.
Simultaneously, Russian forces targeted critical infrastructure in Ukraine, specifically striking bridges in Kyiv and the Zaporizhzhia region. Reports from TASS indicate that Russian forces hit the North Bridge in Kyiv, which is reportedly used for moving military personnel. This follows a pattern of recent strikes against the city's North and South bridges. While Russian officials emphasize the tactical necessity of these strikes, the surge in drone activity reflects a continuous intensification of cross-border hostilities. Local authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage as the conflict remains active.
