Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel seeks Cypriot passport to facilitate transfer
Sixteen-year-old Manchester United academy standout JJ Gabriel has officially requested to leave the club, sparking significant interest from top European teams including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain. To facilitate a move, the English-born striker, who turned 16 on October 6, 2026, is in the process of obtaining a Cypriot passport through his mother's heritage. This strategic move is intended to bypass non-EU status restrictions, allowing him to sign with a continental club as a free agent starting January 1, 2027.
Gabriel, who has recorded 29 goals and 4 assists in 32 appearances for the U18 squad, is reportedly no longer attending training sessions at Manchester United. Sources indicate the relationship between the player and the club has reached a stalemate. While his acquisition of a Cypriot passport will resolve his status as a foreign player in European leagues, his international future remains open; though he is eligible to represent Cyprus, he has previously played for England youth teams and currently views England as his priority. Should he transfer outside of England in January, Manchester United would be entitled to a development compensation fee of approximately 300,000 to 400,000 euros.
