Government officials and local authorities discuss new prison site in Agios Sozomenos
On October 6, 2026, the Cypriot Ministry of Justice and Public Order met with mayors and deputy mayors of the South Nicosia-Idali and Latsia-Geri municipalities to discuss plans for a new correctional facility in the Agios Sozomenos area. The meeting followed heightened public pressure regarding prison overcrowding, which recently led to security lapses, including a prisoner escape from the Lakatamia station on September 25. Police personnel have reported severe congestion, with cells holding far more detainees than their intended capacity, necessitating immediate infrastructure solutions.
Justice Minister Costas Fitiris and municipal leaders agreed to continue a dialogue throughout the planning process. The government has identified a state-owned plot in Agios Sozomenos for potential development, though final approval remains contingent upon the completion of a master plan and comprehensive technical and environmental assessments. Reports indicate that the proposal faces significant logistical challenges, as existing industrial units, such as livestock farms and a sewage plant, would need to be relocated to accommodate the prison. The project is now part of a revised five-year development plan, with further consultations scheduled to address local concerns before any definitive construction decisions are finalized.
