Energy ministers discuss Eastern Mediterranean gas corridor in Athens
Cyprus Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Michalis Damianos, traveled to Athens on October 6, 2026, to participate in an East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) and HELLENiQ ENERGY conference dedicated to accelerating the Eastern Mediterranean energy corridor. During the event, Damianos held bilateral meetings with Greek Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis, and Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, followed by a trilateral meeting among the three officials.
The discussions focused on fast-tracking the connection of Cypriot natural gas reserves to Egyptian infrastructure. Key priority projects included the 'Cronos' field, which maintains a production target of 2028, the development of the 'Aphrodite' field, and recent discoveries made by the ExxonMobil–QatarEnergy consortium within the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone. Officials emphasized the need for administrative and technical synergy to ensure the commercial exploitation of these resources via existing Egyptian facilities. The meetings underscored a shared commitment to regional cooperation in transforming the Eastern Mediterranean into a functional and reliable energy route.
