Carlos Alcaraz wins second consecutive Japan Open title
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz won the Japan Open on Tuesday by defeating Czech player Jiri Lehecka 7-6(4) 6-4 in the final in Tokyo. This victory marks the 23-year-old Spaniard's third title of the year, following his wins at the Australian Open and Qatar Open. Alcaraz, the current world number three, became the first man to defend the Tokyo title since Pete Sampras accomplished the feat in 1993-1994.
The tournament win serves as a major milestone for Alcaraz, who recently returned to professional tennis after a five-month hiatus due to a wrist injury sustained shortly after his Australian Open victory in February. Before reaching the final against Lehecka, Alcaraz defeated qualifier Jaume Munar in the semi-finals on Monday with a score of 5-7 6-3 6-1. Despite admitting to slow starts and uncharacteristic errors throughout the week, including dropping 16 consecutive points during his semi-final match, the Spaniard successfully navigated the conditions to secure the trophy.
Alcaraz's successful run continues his resurgence since returning to competition at the US Open in late August and participating in the Laver Cup. The ATP 500 tournament win confirms his effective return to top-level form despite lingering physical challenges.
