Cyprus and Greece sign memorandum on educational cooperation
On October 6, 2026, Cyprus and Greece formalized a new memorandum of cooperation aimed at promoting Cypriot history and the role of Cypriot Hellenism within the broader Greek world. The signing ceremony took place at the Holy Archdiocese in Nicosia, with participants including Cypriot Minister of Education Athena Michaelidou, Greek Minister of Education Sophia Zacharaki, Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus, and Metropolitan Chrysostomos III of Messenia, representing Archbishop Ieronymos of Greece.
The agreement focuses on joint educational initiatives, including seminars for teachers and clergy, an annual student competition, educational visits, and the development of digital infrastructure to preserve historical memory. Prior to the ceremony, the ministers visited the Hatzigeorgakis Kornesios Elementary School and the Pancyprian Gymnasium.
Following the signing, the ministers held a working meeting at the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth to discuss future bilateral agendas. They announced plans for an upcoming interstate meeting in mid-November that will address critical issues, including the integration of artificial intelligence in education, special education, vocational training, and skill development. Both parties emphasized the historically high level of educational cooperation between the two nations and committed to strengthening these ties through future initiatives.
