Greek authorities investigate 18 influencers over illegal gambling promotion
Greek authorities have launched an investigation into 18 prominent influencers, including rappers, models, TikTokers, and former reality show contestants, for allegedly promoting unauthorized online gambling platforms. Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis announced the development during a speech to the Gaming Supervision and Control Commission, stating that formal complaints have been filed and preliminary investigations are underway. The minister emphasized that online popularity does not grant immunity, and that influencers bear responsibility for the content they promote.
The investigation focuses on the reach and revenue associated with these social media accounts, many of which have significant influence over younger audiences. Statistics reveal that the account with the largest following—belonging to a trap artist—exceeds 620,000 followers on Instagram. In total, 10 of the 18 individuals under scrutiny have over 100,000 followers, with several others maintaining followings between 180,000 and 340,000. Authorities are currently reviewing posts, videos, and links used to direct users to illegal gambling sites.
This crackdown occurs against the backdrop of broader efforts to curb illegal gambling in Greece, with approximately 15,000 websites already blacklisted by the commission. Minister Pierrakakis highlighted the difficulty in regulating the digital sphere, where platforms and gambling sites frequently change their domains to bypass legal restrictions. The investigation remains in its preliminary stage, with further legal actions expected as authorities continue to monitor the impact of these promotional activities.
