Recovery efforts continue following shipwreck off Kyrenia coast
Search and recovery operations are ongoing following the shipwreck that occurred on August 30 off the coast of Kyrenia. As of October 8, 2026, the official death toll from the maritime tragedy has risen to 27, following the discovery of several additional bodies throughout the week. Only one person remains officially listed as missing, according to authorities in the occupied areas.
Recent identification efforts have successfully named several victims. Bodies identified earlier in the week included Mahmut Demir, Ozgur Gunil, and Orhan Bekret, while the most recently discovered body is currently undergoing forensic examination for identification. Mustafa Demir, the older brother of one of the victims, remains among those missing.
Authorities continue to conduct DNA testing and formal identification processes for each recovered body. The search for the final missing individual is expected to persist until all victims are accounted for. The total number of confirmed fatalities has increased incrementally as rescue teams continue to scan the area near the initial shipwreck site.
