University of Cyprus prepares for rectoral elections
The University of Cyprus is set to hold elections for its new rectoral authorities on October 7, 2026. The polling stations will open at 7:45 a.m., with an electorate consisting of 318 academics, 117 departmental council representatives, and 21 administrative staff members eligible to cast their votes.
Five candidates are competing for the position of rector: Ioannis Giapintzakis, Tatiana-Eleni Synodinou, Marina Neophytou, Fofi Constantinidou, and Sophronis Clerides. Two candidates, Antonis Ellinas and Marios Dikaiakos, are running for the position of Vice-Rector for International Relations, Finance, and Administration. Georgia Panayiotou is the sole candidate for Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs; however, she must secure at least 50% of the positive votes from the electorate to be officially declared elected.
The incoming leadership will face significant operational challenges, including concerns regarding accessibility to university lecture halls and various student-related issues. These elections mark a critical transition period for the institution as it looks to address internal infrastructure and administrative concerns.
