Heating oil prices surge significantly in Greece
Consumers in Greece are facing severe financial strain due to a sharp rise in heating oil prices as the winter season approaches. As of early October 2026, the average price of heating oil has climbed to 1.67 euros per liter, reflecting a 67% increase compared to the 1 euro per liter recorded exactly one year ago. Some reports further suggest an increase of 71 cents per liter since March.
According to the Consumers' Association, a typical household requiring 1,500 liters for the winter will now pay 2,505 euros, an additional cost of 1,005 euros compared to the previous year. While the government plans to implement a reduction in the consumption tax starting November 1, stakeholders like Christodoulos Christodoulou, a representative for gas station owners, have criticized the measure as insufficient, noting that a 5-cent-per-liter cut will fail to alleviate the burden on the public. Consequently, heating oil consumption is already showing a downward trend as families struggle with the rising cost of living.
Looking ahead, market experts warn that further price hikes are expected in the coming weeks. The combination of stagnant fuel subsidies and inflationary pressures continues to make essential heating a luxury for many households, with no major state intervention currently in sight to curb the upward trajectory.
