Russia launches massive missile and drone strikes across Ukraine
On October 7, 2026, Russia conducted a massive coordinated air attack across 12 regions of Ukraine, utilizing approximately 70 missiles—including several ballistic missiles—and dozens of strike drones. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized the offensive as an act of "absolute terror" and a symbolic gesture for Vladimir Putin's 74th birthday. The strikes specifically targeted critical energy infrastructure, leaving large parts of Kyiv without electricity, and struck residential and industrial areas.
Among the most severe incidents was a strike on a five-story apartment building in the northern city of Pryluky, located in the Chernihiv region. Emergency services reported at least 14 fatalities at this site, including four children, while 50 people were injured. Across the country, the total death toll rose to at least 28, with 118 individuals injured, including five children. The Ukrainian Air Force reported the interception of five ballistic missiles, 39 cruise missiles, and 117 drones.
The ongoing conflict, now in its fifth year, has seen intensified pressure on the Ukrainian power grid as winter approaches. DTEK, the national energy provider, had already implemented consumption restrictions prior to these latest strikes. Rescue operations continue at impacted sites, and the Ukrainian government maintains high alert levels as officials assess the extensive damage to infrastructure and civilian casualties.
