European Commission responds to Turkish Cypriot leader regarding cancelled events
On October 6, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman announced that he received a formal response from the European Commission regarding his complaints about the cancellation of international events in the north. Erhurman had sent letters to the European Union and the United Nations on August 28, alleging that actions by the Greek Cypriot side led to the obstruction of a music festival in Kyrenia and a children’s football camp organized by FC Barcelona.
In its reply, the European Commission stated that it has “carefully noted” Erhurman’s concerns regarding the impact of these cancellations on the ongoing UN-led reconciliation process. The response referenced the recent visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the island and emphasized the necessity of fostering trust and a positive atmosphere between the two communities. Furthermore, the Commission noted that civil society initiatives and private projects contributing to the socioeconomic development of Turkish Cypriots, particularly the youth, are consistent with EU objectives to end the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community and improve dialogue.
Erhurman highlighted that his original communication warned that these obstructions undermined trust between the parties. The current status involves the European Commission reaffirming its goal to build bridges and facilitate closer relations between Turkish Cypriots and the EU, citing a 2004 Council decision as the basis for these efforts.
