Athienou bread and wedding loukoumi apply for EU PGI status
The Department of Agriculture in Cyprus submitted applications to the European Commission at the end of September 2026 to register Athienou bread and Athienou wedding loukoumi as products with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). These applications follow a successful national approval phase where no objections were raised against the local products.
Athienou Mayor Kyriakos Kareklas stated that the European Commission is currently reviewing the files. If the applications are deemed complete, they will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union, opening a window for further public objections. If the process concludes successfully without challenges, both products will be officially added to the EU registry of PGI-protected goods, similar to previous registrations of products like Geroskipou loukoumi and Sotira kolokasi.
Authorities expect a final decision by 2027. Mayor Kareklas emphasized that this designation is a significant step forward, as it is expected to enhance the market value, profile, and sales of the traditional Athienou products on an international level.
