Israel commemorates third anniversary of October 7 attack
On October 7, 2026, Israel marks three years since the Hamas-led attack of 2023, the deadliest day in the nation's history. Commemorative vigils are scheduled at the Nova music festival site near the Gaza border, where 348 people were killed, and at Hostage Square in Tel Aviv. The events come as the country prepares for national elections in 20 days, which are widely considered a referendum on the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The 2023 assault resulted in 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages into Gaza. Subsequent Israeli military operations in the region have led to the deaths of more than 74,000 people according to local health authorities. While a ceasefire has been in place for a year, conditions in Gaza remain dire due to widespread destruction from the conflict.
This anniversary is the first observed without any hostages remaining in Gaza, as all captives—both living and deceased—were exchanged for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. The recovery of the final hostage's remains occurred in January, concluding the hostage crisis that defined much of the post-attack period.
