Search operations continue after fatal ferry sinking off Kyrenia
A search and recovery mission is ongoing off the coast of Kyrenia following the sinking of a passenger ferry on August 30. The vessel was en route to Tasucu, Turkey, carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members. As of October 9, authorities have recovered 27 bodies, leaving only one passenger, Suleyman Erdogan, still unaccounted for. Among the deceased recently identified are 12-year-old Miray Bicer, as well as Mahmut Demir, Ozgur Gonul, and Orhan Bekret.
Legal proceedings are underway against nine individuals, including the captain, Mustafa Oz, and representatives of the operating company, Filo Denizcilik. During recent court hearings, it was revealed that the ferry’s black box was deactivated two days prior to the sinking, on August 28. Evidence presented to the court suggests that the crew was aware of technical malfunctions, with recorded discussions mentioning water ingress and concerns about the vessel's seaworthiness. Investigation into these systemic failures and the circumstances of the disaster remains ongoing as the court continues to examine the culpability of those in custody.
